Cities that have already prioritised and budgeted for green transition are now becoming a stronger driving force for AI-demand within CitComTEF’s network of cutting-edge solution providers.
As the project evolves, it has become evident that offering testing facilities to innovative SMEs is not enough if there is no clearly articulated market demand. Without a visible pipeline of customers, it is difficult to attract companies and scale solutions.
This insight has strengthened the work around City Challenges concept, where cities define concrete needs and invite European solution providers to respond.
Here, Gate 21 plays a key role by helping to aggregate and clarify municipal demand. By mapping climate plans, strategies and allocated budgets, for example within building renovation and energy optimisation, we can identify where there is both political commitment and financial readiness.
This makes it possible to approach specific municipalities with a clear profile and match them with relevant SMEs
“Our role is to make sure that real municipal priorities become real market opportunities.”- Morten Koed Rasmussen, project manager, Gate 21.
The next City Challenge is expected to focus on the building sector, driven in part by new European requirements for transforming the existing building stock. In this case, cities are not only motivated, but they are also obliged to act.
That creates a strong and scalable demand signal that is highly relevant for AI providers across Europe.
In parallel, Gate 21 supports the practical side of experimentation. Through digital infrastructure and our IoT platform, access can be provided to data, test environments and real urban contexts where solutions can be validated. In this way, innovation is anchored in real needs and real conditions.
By systematically connecting documented city demand with European supply, Gate 21 strengthens CitComTEF’s role as a bridge between municipalities and cutting-edge AI providers and helps turn strategic ambitions into deployable solutions, and ultimately, a greener and more competitive Europe.
