What happens when startups developing cutting-edge AI tools meet the day-to-day challenges of a municipality? CitCom.ai’s City Challenges are designed to answer that question by creating a structured, hands-on way for local governments and AI innovators to connect, explore solutions, and learn from each other.

In the recent City Challenge in Guldborgsund Municipality, startups were invited to address a specific local need: better mapping of mobility data to support more informed planning. With help from OpenCall Denmark and InnoBA, the municipality identified areas where data-driven insights could make a real difference, from improving public transport to understanding how residents move through the city.

For the participating startups, the challenge was a chance to present their ideas directly to those who would actually use them and to get immediate feedback from municipal staff, planners, and local experts. For the municipality, it was an opportunity to see what is possible with the latest AI tools and to shape their development based on real-world constraints and priorities.

The process was not just about finding a single winning solution. It was also about building relationships, testing assumptions, and helping both sides learn what is needed to bring AI from concept to practice in the public sector.

CitCom.ai will continue to host City Challenges in 2025, offering more municipalities and startups the chance to co-create solutions that are rooted in reality and ready to scale.

If you're organisation has vested interests in AI-solutions for local governments or urban environments you will have an opportunity to follow the City Challenges by participating in the calls as an evaluator, and directly contribute to the selected solution.

Future City Challenges will be announced here and on our LinkedIn channel.
